Dr. Yuan on Diamonds: A visit to Alrosa, Russia
From July 7 to 13, 2007, with the visiting group organized by the Russian National Academy of Sciences, the organizer of the 30th International Gemological Conference (International Gemmological Conference, IGC), we visited Mirney, the diamond city of Yakutia (Yakutia) in Siberia, and took the plane of Alrosa Airlines from Moscow for a six-hour flight. When we arrived over Mirney, we could see dozens of large and small circular holes on the ground, with a diameter of more than a thousand meters, small tens of meters. These are diamond-containing Kimberley tubes, which are not allowed to fly over the potholes by aircraft. Mirney began to build from a wasteland around 1950 because of the discovery of diamond mines here. It has become a city with 50,000 residents. All the people, things and things in this city operate around diamonds.

After natural diamonds are processed from rough, the retail price of finished products is about twice the wholesale price. After the rough processing of cultivated diamonds, the retail price of finished products is about 4-5 times the wholesale price. The profit margin of cultivated diamonds is obviously higher than that of natural diamonds. Therefore, many natural diamond businesses are attracted to change to cultivated diamonds, and other industries they come into contact with are gradually changing to cultivated diamonds, not only selling, more into the most upstream part of the growth. The global production of CVD-cultivated diamond rough will be about 10 million carats in 2021, but most of the colors are not good enough. In November 2020, GIA began to produce a fine-graded cultivation diamond grading report certificate. The content is exactly the same as the identification certificate of natural diamonds. The color and clarity no longer use the coarse grading mode, but use the fine grading mode: D, E, F, G, H, I..., IF, VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1..., etc. The price of the certificate is exactly the same as that of natural diamonds, the only difference is that there is no paper certificate.
