Dr. Yuan talks about diamonds: GIA nurtures diamond grading report certificates to make it easy to set certificates

In November 2020, GIA began to issue the grading report certificate of fine grading cultivation diamond. The content is exactly the same as the identification certificate of natural diamond. The color and clarity no longer use the coarse grading mode, but use the fine grading mode: D, E, F, G, H, I..., IF, VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1..., etc. The price of the certificate is exactly the same as that of natural diamond, the only difference is that there is no paper certificate.

The actual sales of GIA-graded cultivated diamonds found that retailers and consumers rejected GIA-graded diamonds. They were worried that without paper certificates, unscrupulous wholesalers could print out multiple certificates on GIA web pages, then find similar diamonds with slightly lower quality, and cut and grind finished products according to the length, width, height and weight of the certificates, the diamond waistline is then laser engraved with the GIA logo and the same number as this certificate. In the mode of set of certificates, multiple sets of certificates and diamonds are copied, and the consumers bought are damaged. The font engraved around the waist is too small. Most people cannot see the font clearly with a 10-fold magnifying glass, and it is even more difficult to judge whether the lettering is GIA original lettering. Therefore, people refused to buy GIA-graded cultivated diamonds. As a result, wholesalers have a large number of GIA-graded diamonds, which are difficult to sell and cause great trouble.

The cultivated diamonds identified by IGI are accompanied by a physical certificate. Each cultivated diamond has only one exquisite paper certificate. Although it can be downloaded online, the downloaded version is shown in the following figure, with the words "ELECTRONIC COPY" in red, so I am not worried about buying diamonds with a set of certificates.

The price of GIA diamond grading report certificate is exactly the same as that of natural diamond, but the price of cultivated diamond is only 1/10~1/3 of that of natural diamond, and the share of certificate fee in diamond value is too high and unreasonable. Taking 0.23 karat finished cultivated diamonds as an example, the wholesale price of GH/VS is about US $70/grain, and the cost of GIA cultivated diamond grading report and lettering is about US $71/grain. The value of the whole diamond is not enough to cover GIA's cost. Taking 1 karat finished cultivated diamonds as an example, the wholesale price of H/VS2 is about US $800/grain, GIA cultivated diamond grading report cost and lettering cost are about US $125/grain, and GIA cost accounts for about 16% of the wholesale price of diamonds. IGI certificate and lettering cost about 85 USD/grain, accounting for about 11% of the wholesale price of diamonds. NGTC certificate membership price is about 31 USD/grain, accounting for about 4% of diamond wholesale price.

1 karat H/VS2 natural diamonds cost GIA US $125 per diamond, accounting for about 2% of the wholesale price of US $6000 per diamond. The cost of certificates and lettering accounts for 2% of the price of the goods, which is basically absorbed by the former shipper. But cultivated diamonds 1 karat account for 16 per cent; 0.23 karat account for more than 100 per cent, which are unreasonably high, and global appraisers should design a simplified grading certificate for cultivated diamonds to reduce the cost of grading and make it a reasonable ratio to the value of diamonds.
